Farr<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MONROVIA\u00ad\u00ad \u2013 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined two companies and shut down another for violations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clientearth.org\/media\/pn3imugv\/act-2002-act-creating-the-environment-protection-agency-of-the-republic-of-liberia-ext-en.pdf\">Environmental Protection and Management Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">East International Construction Company, which builds roads, got the lion&#8217;s share of the fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEast International is hereby fined US$55,000 to be paid in Government Revenue at the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) with an official receipt presented to the EPA,\u201d Acting EPA Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo told a news conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An EPA investigation found East International operates under an expired environmental permit, Yarkpawolo said. Investigators also found the company liable for air pollution over its construction of the Roberts International Airport Highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome people reported respiratory problems such as coughing and asthma as the major health issues affecting them,\u201d Yarkpawolo said. He ordered East International to follow the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPA shut down Fengshou International, an affiliate of East International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yarkpawolo said the company would remain closed \u201cuntil a more sustainable method is approved by the EPA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company unsustainably backfilled and was constructing a two-kilometer road on a portion of the Marshall Wetland in Margibi County, &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rsis.ramsar.org\/ris\/1630\">protected under a UN convention<\/a>. The EPA also found that Fengshou extended its rock quarrying into the wetland and constructed a rock sale point there without authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">East International and Fengshou did not immediately respond to queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Wetlands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPA says it was taking wetlands\u2019 protection seriously, and citizens closest to the mangroves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the coming days, the EPA will conduct a thorough engagement with relevant institutions of government and other stakeholders to curtail the upsurge in the wave of wetland degradations,\u201d Dr. Yarkpawolo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecent complaints and EPA field assessment reports have highlighted massive clearing of mangroves along the Police Academy SKD Boulevard, as well as backfilling activities, including Pago\u2019s Island, New Matadi Fanti Town, Dixville, Jacob Town, etc,\u201d Yarkpawolo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPA called on the media to help in providing public awareness and asked the public to cooperate with the agency in protecting wetlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe EPA will be engaging with relevant law enforcement authorities to arrest all violators,\u201d Yarkpawolo added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-696x522.jpg 696w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-1920x1440.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-265x198.jpg 265w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-1320x990.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Quezp2-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The EPA fined Quezp Mining Company US$2,999 and ordered it to fund a US$12,999 restoration plan for two zircon-sand mines it operates in Brewerville and Royesville. The DayLight\/Charles Gbayor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, the EPA ordered Quezp Mining Corporation Inc. to pay nearly US$16,000 for illegal sand mining activities in Brewerville and Royesville. A DayLight investigation showed that Quezp did not have licenses for the operations. The company&#8217;s mineworkers fled the area after the publication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPA fined Quezp US$2,999 for <a href=\"https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/2024\/03\/04\/epa-orders-miners-to-pay-us16k-over-illegal-acts\/\">mining without an environmental permit<\/a>.
