Farr<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MONROVIA \u2013 The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has disapproved of carbon credit negotiations between an American-owned company &nbsp;BlueEarth Capital and rural communities following an <a href=\"https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/2023\/09\/14\/inside-a-problematic-carbon-deal-in-river-cess\/\">investigation<\/a> by The DayLight that exposed irregularities with the deal. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[The EPA] has thus issued an immediate resolute call to all communities involved in discussions with the company (BlueEarth) to cease all engagements without delay or risk drastic actions,\u201d said the agency in a <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02YZPZKZsS2qtKW2L7RV8x9Kxb84A4s5UmoSdnsASJYeRajnha3sWG6JnHgbrhNoRl&amp;id=100064778043668&amp;sfnsn=wa&amp;mibextid=6aamW6\">statement<\/a> over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEPA\u2019s involvement and approval are non-negotiable pre-requisites in carbon credit deals in Liberia,\u201d it added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency further expressed \u201cprofound dismay\u201d over the ongoing illegal carbon negotiations between BlueEarth Capital and residents of Ziadue Clan, River Cess County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release came on the back of a DayLight story on &nbsp;BlueEarth\u2019s proposed MoU with Ziadue to save carbon credits on more than 55,000 hectares of forestland. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DayLight reported a number of illegalities associated with the proposed deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation showed BlueEarth induced community leaders to consent to the deal by underwriting their transportation and food costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It proved that ordinary townspeople and some community leaders were still unaware of the deal despite emerging in March, a violation of locals\u2019 right to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC). &nbsp;(FPIC is guaranteed in the Community Rights Law, the Land Rights Act, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deal sought over 55,000 hectares, more than 8,000 hectares of the uncontracted area Ziadue has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was illegally intended to last for 25 years, 10 more than the legal duration of a community forest contract, based on the Community Rights Law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EPA, one of the agencies responsible for regulating the carbon industry, said it was caught unaware by The DayLight\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-696x522.jpg 696w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-1920x1440.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-265x198.jpg 265w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-1320x990.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/stage.thedaylight.org\/wp68\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ziadu-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">BlueEarth Capital intended to capture carbon credits in more than 55,000 hectares of forestland in Ziadue Clan, Central River Cess District in River Cess County. BlueEarth has also engaged communities in Nimba, Grand Cape Mount and Gbarpolu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ziadue Clan\u2019s land leadership said they would now focus on getting its ancestral land deed, a process it has almost completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are customary people. What we are running after now is our confirmatory survey to get a deed from the Liberia Land Authority (LLA),\u201d said Emmanuel Roberts, the chairman of the Ziadue\u2019s community land development management committee (CLDMC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we have anything to do with BlueEarth Capital, it will not be hidden from the national government, civil society organizations and our consultant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Augustine Jarrett, BlueEarth\u2019s American owner and former presidential adviser, did not answer questions for comments on the matter.
