Farr<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CENTRAL RIVER CESS DISTRICT \u2013 Three clans in River Cess County have met the requirements for a government-conducted survey, the final legal step leading to a customary land deed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ziadue, Teekpeh and Dorbor\u2014all in the Central River Cess District\u2014reached the landmark early last month. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are aware that three communities are ready\u2026,\u201d said &nbsp;Lincoln Flomo, the head of the monitoring and evaluation division of the Liberia Land Authority (LLA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flomo said the leaderships of the three communities would have to meet with LLA representatives and civil society organizations (CSOs) before the survey was conducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ziadue, Teekpeh and Dorbor self-identified as landowning communities, mapped their respective boundaries and drafted bylaws and constitutions to reach this stage. They formed their respective leadership structures, &nbsp;&nbsp;known as community land development and management committees or CLDMCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Land Rights Act grants rural community people ownership of traditional land but requires them to go through a legal process to get a deed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I am happy to get our land deed because the forest [is]for us and our children will benefit,\u201d said Betty Gaywea a member of Ziadue\u2019s CLDMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to the passage of the Liberia Land Rights Act, rural communities did not own the land they lived on and did not have a say in the management of its resources. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law grants members of rural communities the right to manage their lands and benefit from their resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGetting the land deed will empower us to tell people that the land belongs to us,\u201d said Patience Smith, a member of Teekpeh\u2019s CLDMC member.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having started their journeys in 2020, two years after the signing of the law, the three clans resolved long-standing disputes in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Three Liberian Clans Set for Official Survey for Ancestral Deed\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2FBAErYgUsQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ziadue, Teekpeh and Dorbor had a conflict over a town named Sand Beach Junction. \u00a0After two years of claims and counterclaims, Ziadue and Dorbor surrendered the town with more than 30 houses to Teekpeh. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ziadue and Teekpeh also had a four-year conflict over Yarvoi Town, according to locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was tense to the extent that people from both clans carried cutlasses and single-barrel guns but there was no firing or injuries,\u201d recalled Jackson Sando of the Sustainable Development Institute (SDI).
