Farr<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MONROVIA<strong> <\/strong>\u2013 Liberia recorded the tenth-largest increase in forest loss among countries across the world as of last year, according to a new study by an international think tank.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liberia lost 23 percent of its primary forest as of last year, the World Resources Institute (WRI) has found in its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/research.wri.org\/gfr\/latest-analysis-deforestation-trends?utm_campaign=treecoverloss2022&amp;utm_medium=bitly&amp;utm_source=GFWTwitter\">\u201cForest Pulse\u201d report<\/a>, which analyzes global forest loss and deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report determined the rate of forest loss by comparing the average forest loss of countries from 2015-2022 to the average of 2020-2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 2002 and 2022, <a href=\"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\">Liberia lost 315kha of humid primary forest<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/about\/\">Global Forest Watch<\/a>, a&nbsp; deforestation and illegal activity tracker, run by WRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report calls on the Liberian government and governments of countries to move from making commitments to taking action to curb deforestation. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile some countries have shown promising results to reduce forest loss, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, others have seen continued activities and policies that are causing acceleration of deforestation in critical areas,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProtecting forests remains one of the most effective ways to mitigate global climate change and protect the people and biodiversity that depend on them \u2014 but time is running out,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increase in primary forest loss undermines Liberia\u2019s conservation and climate change commitments. Per the National Forestry Reform Law, the country promised to preserve at least 30 percent of its 1.5-million-hectare rainforest, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_Guinean_forests\">largest in West Africa<\/a>. It also pledged to reduce its national forestation rate by 50 percent in 2030. In September 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmanprize.org\/blog\/norway-agrees-pay-liberia-150-million-end-deforestation-2020\/\">Liberia signed a US$150 million agreement with Norway<\/a> to preserve at least 30 percent of its forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:30px\"><strong>The Worst and Best Performers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of last year, Ghana\u2019s primary forest increase hit 71 percent, the highest in the world. The report cited government policies and corrective actions as contributors to the reduction. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Costa Rica followed in second place, with a 63 percent reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea reduced their primary forest losses by 47 percent and 38 percent, the fifth and seventh respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabon, the report says, continues to reduce its primary forest loss, with 41 percent as of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>This story was a production of the Community of Forest and Environmental Journalists of Liberia (CoFEJ).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Top: An elevation image of a forest in Kokoyah District, Bong County.
