The DayLight\/James Harding Giahyue<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By James Harding Giahyue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MONROVIA \u2013 The United States has pointed out health, safety, and environmental problems that occurred last year in Liberia\u2019s extractive industries, criticizing the Liberian government for human casualties and the lack of accountability in the sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Hazardous occupations were especially dangerous in the informal sector, such as illegal fishing, logging, and mining, where the lack of regulation and remediation contributed to fatalities and obscured accountability,\u201d the U.S. State Department\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/415610_LIBERIA-2022-HUMAN-RIGHTS-REPORT.pdf\">report<\/a>, released Monday, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government did not keep records of industrial accidents, but evidence pointed to mining, construction, forestry, fishing, and agriculture as the most dangerous sectors,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report said businesspeople exploited unsafe and unregulated artisanal mines. It added widespread illegal mining activities resulted \u201cin the deaths of several persons every year, and that \u201cNo official entity provided social protections for informal-sector workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said workers added earnings from subsistent farming, artisanal mining and other informal businesses to their pay from the formal sector. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Corruption<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officially known as the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/reports-bureau-of-democracy-human-rights-and-labor\/country-reports-on-human-rights-practices\/\">Country Reports on Human Rights Practices<\/a>, the U.S. State Department has released the publications, which cover 198 states, for the last five decades. It gauges countries\u2019 political, civil rights and workers\u2019 rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report shined a light on land and other natural resources-related conflicts in rural Liberia and cited a media report of alleged sexual harassment at the Maryland Oil Palm Plantation. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It spoke of \u201csignificant\u201d human rights abuses in the country from \u201cobstruction\u201d of press freedom and \u201cserious\u201d problem with the Judiciary to unlawful killings and the lack of accountability in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere were numerous reports of government corruption during the year,\u201d the report said. It mentioned the resignations of Minister of State for Presidential Affairs &nbsp;Nathaniel McGill, Solicitor General and Chief Prosecutor Sayma Syrenius Cephus, and National Port Authority Managing Director Bill Twehway, who were <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0921#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%94%20Today%2C%20the%20U.S.%20Department,ongoing%20public%20corruption%20in%20Liberia.\">sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cOfficials frequently engaged in corrupt practices with impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Top: An artisanal mine in Wayjue, Grand Cape Mount County on November 20, 2019.
