The DayLight\/James Harding Giahyue<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Varney Kamara<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MONROVIA \u2013 Liberia Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (LEITI) has embarked on the training for civil society organizations in Monrovia for the enhancement of women\u2019s participation in the country\u2019s natural resource sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liberia has passed laws guaranteeing the participation of women in the country\u2019s natural resource management, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Land+Rights+Act+of+2018&amp;rlz=1C1ZZZB_enLR944LR944&amp;oq=Land+Rights+Act+of+2018&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j0i22i30l2.1072j0j15&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Land Rights Act of 2018<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Forestry+Reform+Law+of+2006.&amp;rlz=1C1ZZZB_enLR944LR944&amp;oq=Forestry+Reform+Law+of+2006.+&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j0i22i30.1089j0j15&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Forestry Reform Law of 2006<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Community+Rights+Law+of+2009&amp;rlz=1C1ZZZB_enLR944LR944&amp;oq=Community+Rights+Law+of+2009&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l2.1259j0j15&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Community Rights Law of 200<\/a>9 with Respect to Forest Land. However, only a few women participate in governance activities across the extractive sector, pushing stakeholders to rethink ways to increase their number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen\u2019s issues are national issues. They are societal problems,\u201d said Cerue Konah, facilitator and gender specialist at the Carter Center, at a daylong training on Friday held at the LEITI headquarters in Monrovia. \u201cThis meeting is intended to give stronger voices to women in the national resource governance sector and hence, we must take actions such as reviewing the laws and policies to reflect our collective desire for change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the laws, the patriarchal nature of the Liberian society has posed hindrances to women\u2019s exerting their rights, according to a report by Client Earth, an international environmental law charity, last year. In order to guarantee enhanced women\u2019s participation, it suggests a thorough analysis of the formulation of laws and policies on the environment, including regulations that strengthen these efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the ways for us to end marginalization against women is providing education,\u201d said C.
